What are you supposed to call a cable "modem?"

Well, it's not really a modem, is it? What's the correct term, if I'm not wrong on my last assumption?

I'm just curious, please no "NEF!" replies.

Is the info in a cable modem modulated at their end, then demodulated on ours? Is it?

The modem itself doesn't technically MOdulate or DEModulate anything... the signal comes in digital... and goes out digital...

it's more of a router/switch than anything else technically speaking.

You could call it a receiver maybe? Who knows. Modem works fine for me, mostly because with "modem" you immediately think internet, any other term would imply phones, tv or something.

a cable modem is a modem because it is a modulator demodulator the signal from your computer to the modem is digital then is changed into analog signals to go across the line. And yes the line is analog not digital. Digital lines would be like T1 T3 and ISDN. So you are correct it is a modem

 

cpe? thats what we call DSL modems.

digital line --> analog device = codec
analog line --> digital device = modem

Its a modem, unless your on a baseband network. WHere are you from? that yuo have digital cable internet service.
