You could call it a receiver maybe? Who knows. Modem works fine for me, mostly because with "modem" you immediately think internet, any other term would imply phones, tv or something.

a cable modem is a modem because it is a modulator demodulator the signal from your computer to the modem is digital then is changed into analog signals to go across the line. And yes the line is analog not digital. Digital lines would be like T1 T3 and ISDN. So you are correct it is a modem
