I've noticed that quad-cores seem very popular around here, so I'm interested to hear what you guys use your quads for. I'm currently using a speedy 3.4ghz dual core setup and I'm very happy with it. Can't imagine having two more cores to utilize, however! So, please, share your experiences with your quads and what you do with them.

HD porn. j/k

$ netted from my old computer sale allowed me to upgrade from C2D E6400 and 6600 to Q6600 and 8800GTS 320 for $185. For $92.50 per part, getting a quad seemed cheap enough. I run BOINC on it for the most part and some games but if the price wasn't that cheap, wouldn't have gotten a quad that's for sure. Another reason is resale value. I am pretty sure I'll be able to sell Quad 3.4ghz in 2 years without losing much value while a duo would be worth a lot less. Therefore, in a sense the real cost of owning a quad isn't that high compared to a dual. It makes the system's operation pretty seamless when I run a thorough anti-virus scan, ad-aware, spy bot, BOINC in the background while playing a game. Do I need a quad? Not really, but now I never think about what programs to install in what order. I just click next, next, next on as many windows as I can see ;)

3ds max, architectural desk-top, photoshop, premier.....

They run better on my q6600 with a 8800 GTX than they do on my dual/dual core 3.2 xeon station with a quadro 3500 card

you have a quad, means you can play solitaire, chess, tick tack toe, and hang man all at once.

What's this with 1 instance of solitaire only? :(

AT forums.
XS forums.

Solitare. Oh i run some NES emulation games.

One of my quads sits there and does nothing but file serve. And download more porn for my collection.

Oh to show off my epeen that i have 3 high ocing quads. But it doesnt mean much. :p

Ummm...

On a serious note.

All my quads, 5 to be exact, will be folding again once this heat dies down a bit. The electricity bill raped me hardcore with the AC on most of the day. Dad is retired so he leaves the AC on.

Once it gets a bit cooler, they'll start pushing 100k points on bionic WCG. :p

sgrinavi is using his, but most people who buy them now are buying them for bragging rights.

I use my Q6600 to play chess against other computers. It's a pretty niche field I admit, but without a quad you are dead meat these days. A year ago an over clocked E6600 was enough to be fairly competitive, but no longer.

Mine runs 20+ hours a day at 3.465ghz at 1.45v. I am usually in the top 10 or twenty on the site I play on, but recently competition has increased significantly. I am now looking at upgrading to a QX6850 on a X38 board with some very fast DDR3.

I guess apart from competitive folding, chess represents the only real test of pure number crunching out there.

hot? are you serious? I went to LA a few years ago in april. It never got above 71. I'm lucky to see 2 weeks total per year with a high below 71. of course, with all those quad cores you have, it might be a bit warmer in LA these days...
