My supplies of food, water, ammo/weapons will sustain and protect me long enough to survive longer than the 98% of people who don't have anything. Once those things run out, I can go hunting to sustain and gather water from rivers/my roof.

Just wait until something bad happens and people go APE SHIT trying to get stuff. Does anyone not remember Katrina or the Gas Shortages in the 70s?

Image no gas for a month....or 3? People would go FING CRAZY.

Me and a few friends have a plan if stuff goes wrong, we'll be pooling our resources and we will survive. Just spend 30 minutes thinking about what you do if you couldn't goto the grocery store anymore?

We won't have to run to the grocery store when the stuff goes bad, cause we'll be set.

You have some good ideas but, you're planning for the short run expecting the world to return to normal within a short time months or a few years. If the shit hits the fan, infrastructure of every kind will suffer a cascade failure. Who will feed, clothe, shelter and protect you 10 or 15 years down the road? Who will teach your children? Who will they meet and marry? A viable community is the only possible long term solution

Agreed. The hope is, be prepared to wait out the idiots killing themselves off fighting over scraps, then rebuild with whatever is left over. My friends and I plan on being completely self-sustain, growing food, animals, etc....It's actually pretty cool.

In fact, what happened there - GDP contraction of at least 25-30%, massive unemployment, several hundred % inflation for several years in a roll, a lot of newly-formed organized crime, etc, isn't even close to the worst case scenario for what might happen here.

The boring truth is, life gets tough and people still do the same things they've always done.

Quite true but, there are significant differences between Bulgaria and the U.S. Bulgaria never had the population density of American cities and was/is nowhere near as dependent on modern technology to survive.

I live in a rural area and growing up I know how to hunt, fish, plant a garden, can food and smoke meat. Use a wood stove for heat in the winter, and hand pump on a well for water. It is people that have none of these skills that would suffer. Humans lived for thousands of years without any of the modern conveniences . It is just the majority have forgotten how.

...and see no value in learning those skills. Exactly correct.

Well I'm on a college campus, but I've got a closet full of backpacking/camping gear with mucho tuna, peanut butter, cereal, about 8 MREs, and other non-perishables. Said camping equipment includes a pump-water purifier (not filter, purifier. It filters everything), so water won't be a problem for at least a year (when I have to replace the filter). As for food, I'll just buy a couple of guns for cheap (I've got a lot of money saved up) and teach myself how to use them so I can raid other people when mine runs out.

I'm otherwise in decent shape and have a decent bit of Krav Maga under my belt. All I need is plenty of ammo and a defensible camp site.

Have fun eatin' your ammo.

No, see that's where you're wrong.

Here's the scenario:

1. SHTF
2. You have Food
3. I have guns/ammo
4. I take your food
5. Now I have food
6. You don't
7. Profit

Seriously. Want to be best friends?

True.
The majority of people can't even cook :(

We would learn these skills quick if we had to. In current society, we don't have to, and we instead devote our energy to learning how to do credit default swaps, etc.

It's not a matter of being able to learn, it's a matter of learning fast enough to keep you from dying. Where would you learn those skills from? There is no intarweb and the libraries have been burned or used for kindling.

Ditto....but I need more guns. I want an AR-15 in each hand and a couple of XD45 ACPs on my hips...then I'll be ready to kill zombies, the homeless, etc...

Funny thing was...I posted before I read your post about zombies. It's good that we're all on the same page here. ;)

None whatsoever. I have guns, ammo, and perhaps 2 months worth of non-perishable food, but that's just what I keep around all the time anyway. I know how to plant food, kill and clean animals, tan hides, and fashion items from the leather. I think I'd be alright. No one around here would be in terrible shape because my skills and more are par for the course in this area.

City dwellar here -

aside from watching the movie Red Dawn over and over again I have not prepared at all. I have some warm weather camping gear but nothing else.

I will perish quickly.

1. Make fire
2. Put food over fire
3. Eat food

Not that difficult. As for the other stuff, those that can't grow/hunt their own food will be forced to raid others, a pattern humanity's seen for thousands of years.

I'll probably be in the raider category. I know the basics of how to grow stuff, but not enough to be truly proficient at it. I suppose I could partner up with someone who was the opposite and offer protection in return.

As for hunting, never hunted in my life, but given how close the deer get to people around her, I think raiding the soon to be abandoned Quantico Marine base for a SAW would solve most of my hunting problems. :D
