Just read an article about how hot dog sales are declining and a few explanations are offered. The one that stands out to me is price. I don't know what many of you are seeing at grocery stores, but any decent 16 oz package of hot dogs goes from $4 to $6. I find myself thinking "why the hell should I spend that much on garbage meat ground up and shoved into a casing when I can get top sirloin for $5 or $6 a pound?"

This year we're going to get some baby back ribs and slow cook them in the smoker then make a baked potato bake and cut up some strawberries to go with it, then wash it all down with copious amounts of beer.

How about you? What's going on your grill or in your smoker for the 4th?

Not likely anything special. I don't grill often, but one of my favorite grill foods is tofu shish kabobs :^D

Press as much water from the tofu as you can, cut in chunks, and put it in a bowl. Cut up various vegetables; suggested - cherry tomato(don't cut), onion, carrot, bell pepper, mushroom, cauliflower. Put them in the bowl, and cover the whole thing in barbecue sauce. Let it sit a few hours at least. Put it all on skewers, and cook on the grill. Use the extra sauce to occasionally brush the kabobs. Remove when it looks right. I like it a little overcooked, so they're a little toasty.

I like a nice grilled hot dog or sausage. :(

no clue what we're doing for food on the 4th yet... we've got plans for watching fireworks, but any other outdoor activities will depend on the weather (if it's nice, we'll grill some burgers and dogs outside; if it's not, we'll go inside and probably just do finger foods and sides)

If you're paying $4 to $6 for a pound of hot dogs you just don't understand the karma of the humble weenie. Get the ones that are $1 a package and load 'em up with toppings. If you want something higher end go for brats at $4-$5 a pound.

Also having burgers and of course grilled sausage.

The only hot dogs I will eat now are the Oscar Mayer Angus ones with nitrates/nitrites added. The other ones (and especially the cheapos) are nausea inducing.

I am going to be at Fort Lauderdale Beach. Any suggestions for food? Cant grill on the beach from what I understand. There is a grill at the hotel I am staying at but those are usually sketchy. I could always go with subs or something but was looking for something more fun.

I'll smoke a pork shoulder most likely.
Bison burgers and lamb burgers may be on the menu along with some random brats.

RJ Gators is a fun place to try. Gator tail is actually pretty good! (no joke)
