*Hurl* I bought a small bottle to try and didn't finish it. Wow, that was a waste.
Good sake is delicious, but it's not easy to determine what's good and what's shit. Most of the stuff you'll find in major grocery stores is going to be shit. The super premium junmai daiginjos imported from Japan can run $30 or more for a 720 ml bottle, but that's no guarantee of quality either, just rarity. I'd recommend finding a local Japanese restaurant with a wide variety of sakes and trying a few (or a flight, if they offer it) and seeing if you can find one that appeals to you. I don't remember all the ones I've had that I've enjoyed, but some to look out for: Tears of Dawn, Pure Dawn, Pure Dusk, Pearls of Simplicity, Mirror of Truth, Wandering Poet, Demon Slayer, and most of the line up from SakeOne out of Oregon (G Joy, Momokawa Silver, Momokawa Organic, Momokawa Pearl Nigori). At the very least, Japanese sakes have the most terrific names, like Demon Slayer, or Voices in the Mist, or Garden of Eternity; they're so poetic and epic. Can you imagine if all booze had names like that? If Tanqueray changed its name to Demon Slayer, gin sales would quadruple overnight.
