It's my anniversary with the GF, so we went wine tasting and now are enjoying a 2005 Cristal. Louis Roederer, you'll always be my waifu!

Three things last night
1) bruichladdich: Scottish Barley
2) templeton rye. My first rye, don't really care for the flavor. Just read that they are facing lawsuits over their recipe claims. Apparently it's just a rebranded rye from some other producer in Indiana, not some old family prohibition recipe like they claim.
3) tap 357 maple rye. Like drinking alchoholic maple syrup. Mmmmm.

*Hurl* I bought a small bottle to try and didn't finish it. Wow, that was a waste.

Good sake is delicious, but it's not easy to determine what's good and what's shit. Most of the stuff you'll find in major grocery stores is going to be shit. The super premium junmai daiginjos imported from Japan can run $30 or more for a 720 ml bottle, but that's no guarantee of quality either, just rarity. I'd recommend finding a local Japanese restaurant with a wide variety of sakes and trying a few (or a flight, if they offer it) and seeing if you can find one that appeals to you. I don't remember all the ones I've had that I've enjoyed, but some to look out for: Tears of Dawn, Pure Dawn, Pure Dusk, Pearls of Simplicity, Mirror of Truth, Wandering Poet, Demon Slayer, and most of the line up from SakeOne out of Oregon (G Joy, Momokawa Silver, Momokawa Organic, Momokawa Pearl Nigori). At the very least, Japanese sakes have the most terrific names, like Demon Slayer, or Voices in the Mist, or Garden of Eternity; they're so poetic and epic. Can you imagine if all booze had names like that? If Tanqueray changed its name to Demon Slayer, gin sales would quadruple overnight.

I can't drink the stuff either.

Mainly because it tastes a bit like Fino and Fino is served chilled. So to me Sake tastes like warm, off Fino.

Good sakes are meant to be served chilled; warm sake is meant to mask the imperfections of inferior brews. So I agree, warm sake is nasty, but that's basically like saying you don't like beer because you've only ever tried Bud Light (which someone courteously warmed up for you). A nice chilled junmai daiginjoshu can be heavenly.

I can see that being good. I'll be round later.

Ninkasi Tricerahops Double IPA. Very hoppy, piney, delicious double IPA. It tastes like an evergreen rainforest, which makes it fairly quintessentially Oregon. Damn good stuff, although not as sweet as their Total Domination, so a little less approachable. But still very good.

What an absolutely lovely whisky. Peaty, smoky, sweet, it's like a campfire after a rainstorm. Sitting back with a dram of this and watching the rain pour down outside is a singular experience that helps illuminate the great beauty that life has to offer.

Went through rum too quickly so I've been transitioning to whiskey. Had my first taste of this watching Whiplash...really enjoyed the effect and felt smoother than Jameson.

I tried 12yr Glenlivet (IIRC) from my brother a while ago, which was really good. But this feels like a decent whiskey for everyday.
