What are .wks & .wps? Ok, so they are MS Works, how do you open them?

What are these files? I suspect MS Work version of .xls and .doc? And how do I open them? Why don't people use std file formats? :|

They're Microsoft Works file formats, & the reason people use them is because Works = cheap & bundled with many new systems.

Normally, you can't open works files with Office. I've seen some plug-ins around and there is a conversion utility somewhere on MS's website if you want to go look.

Do you have Word? If so, use the MS Office CD to install the ability to read/write all major formats. For the life of me, I don't understand why people install Office without the most useful functions (one example is the solver function in Excel). If you don't have Word, then you can use notepad to read the text in each - you just have to scroll past the jibberish at the beginning and the end.

Someone posted this link to an MsWorks conversion download site. I haven't tried anything on it yet but you might check them out.
