What are we not being told?? Why no visible concern??

I'm sure that I read that novel a few years back. Just can't remember the author's name. Don't think that it was that Clancy fella.

All ICBMs travel at hypersonic speeds.
the very first Atlas ICBMs in the 1950s could travel faster than mach 10.

Top speed of ICBMs is usually limited by gravity, too fast an they break away from the Earth's gravity well.

They claim to have a missle that can go 23 times the speed of sound. That equals - approx. 17,051 mph or mach 23.
So why are we not concerned?
You do realize that means that Moscow is only 4,861 miles approx. from the US!!
There would barrely be 25 minutes warning if a warning was given....hmmmmm

Ok, why am I supposed to worry? This is most likely Putin making shit up but if he's not then there's no real change. We can't stop a mass launch of what already exists and Putin and his will die as a result.

Run into the cliff at 200mph or 700, you are dead.

Because this is not news to anyone who understands how a ballistic missile works?

25 minute warning?

Luxury!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-minute_warning

The four-minute warning was a public alert system conceived by the British Government during the Cold War and operated between 1953 and 1992. The name derived from the approximate length of time from the point at which a Soviet nuclear missile attack against the United Kingdom could be confirmed and the impact of those missiles on their targets. The population was to be notified by means of air raid sirens, television and radio, and urged to seek cover immediately. In practice, the warning would have been more likely three minutes or less.

hahha So you claim to know how a ballistic middle works....Oh thatas right I forgot this is the internet you can claim anything you want...hahaha

How is he wrong? Warning time for an icbm strike from Russia to the US is approx 30 min. Stop posting stupid threads without educating yourself some first.

There is no speed of sound in space. I can claim travel mach ∞ in space; it has no meaning.

I really can't tell who is or is not being serious in this thread.

It's not that complicated how 'ballistic missiles work' at a basic level. The clue is kind of in the name. And there's always been a very short warning time from launch to megadeath, certainly for anyone in Europe. But clearly, as Lanyap says, a wall is the solution. You just have to build it high enough. And maybe put a roof on it.

Build a wall dammit!

Build it out of giant stone blocks. Capture & enslave all the illegals & other enemies of the White Race in this country to do it all by hand, the old fashioned way. Shoot the slackers, the injured & the feeble for better efficiency.

You know they want it.

Apparently this guy know something

Podvig said it's not clear if the weapons really provide useful additional military capabilities. "It has been described as a weapon in search of a mission," he told Live Science. "My take is, you don't really need this kind of capability. It doesn't really change much in terms of ability to hit targets

There are two reasons we're not concerned:

First, this is Putin's Russia. This is propaganda. We don't know how well this system actually works, or if it'd even be useful in practice. Remember how Reagan wasted huge amounts of money on "Star Wars" defense systems that were actually ineffective? It's about the outward show of power more than meaningful technology.

The other bit is that Russia knows it can't really use this system the way it's advertised. For all of Putin's bloviating, the truth is that Russia wouldn't be much of a military threat unless it went nuclear (and even Putin knows not to try that). It's a long way from its Soviet Union heyday. Attack and it opens itself up to a combined retaliation that it can't possibly defeat.

There's a lot of propaganda bullshit behind this. Remember when Reagan renounced the ABM treaty? When GWB announced we'd be installing them in Eastern Europe to counter nuclear strikes from rogue middle easterners who don't have nuclear weapons?

Putin has to counter that in some way, and this tech is the attempt. Not that we've actually deployed enough ABM tech to effectively thwart a first strike by them in the first place.

Trump renouncing the IRBM treaty gives Putin the rationale he needs to deploy them as well. I'm sure our European allies are just thrilled, huh?

The Space Farce is just more of the same.

Did this new missile change how far Russia is to anyone else? Because I think they were the same distance before this missile too. And they have big scary nukes in subs that are closer than Moscow too.

How is you reading a news article about this somehow " what are we not being told?" Clearly someone is telling you if you came here to have a civil discussion about interesting technology - ah, who am I kidding. You definitely came he to spout nonsensical ignorance and fear mongering.

Actually, yes. My father was an engineer with TRW until he died in 1986. Besides working on numerous NASA projects including the Hubble and Voyager programs (A peice of my dad is outside the solar system) he also worked on the ICBM defense laser programs at TRW's secret facility outside Camp Pendleton in San Clemente. Thus he, and us by extension, were well versed on how ballistic missiles work. Growing up we were a rocketry family. A geek family. And my father loved to talk about his work (what wasn't classified).

Thus I already knew the speed of an ICBM.

You don't even need to go beyond just like the past 5 years of Putin to see this for how full of shit it is. He's been "leaking" superweapons all over the place yet they can't keep their shit from breaking down in spectacular fashion.

They can show it off at parades like they do with their "dead in the water" stealth fighter wannabes and their "can't afford to build it" tank.
Russia <> Soviet Union.

Wait for China to steal the design work and build a copy that actually has a semblance of reliability. Watch China build 50 of those and then abandon the design for a scramjet equipped design that uses a launch platform thats based off a knock of another Russian design.

We stopped being concerned with Russia's PR nonsense awhile back. Their manufacturing processes are horrid. Their stuff is unreliable. they lack the money to produce significant quantities. They lack the military culture to maintain advanced weapons systems to an acceptable level of readiness.

As for these hyper-sonic weapons with "maneuver capability", these aren't super weapons. "Maneuvering" at those speeds is not exactly what it seems. On top of that every change in course results in significant speed reduction and stress. Russia built a glide weapon so every maneuver is going to generate a lot of heat and speed reduction.
Pay attention to high energy laser funding and how the service plan on integrating it into theater defense.

There's still terminal velocity, as it is now, reentry bodies are ballistic. Hell, it's damn near impossible to shoot them down as it is. Not sure other than time, what the advantage is strategically. Now tactically, may be a different issue.
