I would like to keep this broad and just get some feedback from you all as to what you feel are effective ways to get out and make a difference. I realize the first step is get up off your ass, but after that I'm not sure how to make my time matter and opinions heard.

I'm not trying to whine too much, just looking to see if you support activism, rallies, getting involved with certain political groups, etc. I'm a college student who's just tired of feeling like my country is changing for the worse, and I want to do something about it.

Thanks for your feedback!

Get rid of PR Firms, and disallow the government from ever utilizing them. It would also be nice if we could somehow get rid of weasel words, but maybe that would be accomplished by getting rid of the weasels.

100% open immigration with no limits.

Just for the hell of it, really.. I know it wouldn't be a good policy.

Contribute to a charity. Any charity, once a year.
Pay taxes.
Volunteer at least once a year.

Sponsor a needy child (developing county or big brother)
These are some easy ones where you can see real benefits NOW.

About charities.. check out http://www.kiva.org if you haven't yet. Great micro-lending charity.

Go to work for a political party or candidate that shares your views.
I know we pound on them for all their wrong doings, but at the local level your voice can be heard the best and I think you can make the biggest difference.

Why not get involved at your school? Work with or against the student government.
A few years ago Valencia Community College got rid of its sports program due to the work of the student government. They determined that less than 1% of students were involved in the program and yet it sucked up a huge amount of money that could have been spent to better enhance the education of everyone who attended the school.

This woman made a difference and you could try to help her:

http://projectprevention.org/

"Our mission is to reduce the number of substance exposed births to zero."

She runs a program that offers to pay crack addicts money to get themselves sterilized in order to prevent them from having litters of crack babies. I think it's also offered to impoverished women and men.

My hat is off to her. I think this group has a great idea and is working to make a difference.

Heh heh. I can see the news headlines now.

"U.S. Population Swells to 2 Billion."

"Canada debates building a fence to keep out illegal American immigrants."

"Chinese jobs being outsourced to the impoverished United States where businesses can take advantage of the cheap labor."

"Hurricane kills 100,000 poor Americans."

"Famine breaks out in the Nevada region. Warlords fight for control of state."
