What are tower defense games?

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Toy Soldiers on XBLA.

Looks cool, for <$5 I should just get it. Probably a million times better than Far Cry 2 as well.

My wife's been hooked on tower defense games on her phone (first HexDefense and now Defensoid), maybe she'd be interested in this one.

I bought Sanctum at the weekend. It is fun but there isn't much content. Only 4 maps and each one takes around 1 hour to beat on single player, intermediate difficulty. For an indie game that costs &#163;10 I expected a bit more.
