What are title companies?

A friend advised me to go to a title company and seek employment as a typer or file clerk. Apparently there's plenty of them around my area. What exactly is a title company? He said something about someone that owns a title on a house, but that doesn't clarify anything for me.

They do searches people who need to know the legal status of property (ie. homes, businesses, autos, etc.).

Basically, paperwork detectives.
