i want to take two outputs(IE the DVI-out of two seperate computers) and turn it into one so that i can hook it up to a large monitor and have it split screen...what are these things called and are they expensive?

thanks

You would need some sort of video-processing box, and yes, it would most likely be expensive. As expensive as a PC and a high-end video card for sure.

I think the best option would be a monitor that supports picture by picture, like some dell monitors(2007wfp, 2407 wfp). You can connect 1 pc via vga or dvi and the other via s-video or RCA and split the screen. another option is a kvm switch but that only lets you switch between pc's, so not really what you're looking for. There are some KVM's that split a monitor into 4 displays, but there extremly expensive ($3000+).

Wow, it sounds cool, but its usually opposite of what most people want 😀. I wonder what would it be called, Half Display Device??

sweet...too bad they are all expensive as fvck..lol...oh well...i agree with previous posters...PIP would be a better choice
