You guys know those little metal slot/tab things that come w/most cases that cover the holes for the PCI slots? Whenever you install a PCI card you have to remove the little slot cover so you can get to it... bah, you guys know what I mean, right? What are they called? And can you buy them anywhere online, like NewEgg or someplace?

Because who doesn't need to buy them 10 at a time!

Heck even 60 cents apiece is a ripoff. They've got what, 2 cents worth of steel in them. Guess that high-gloss finish is expensive. Kind of like getting keys copied.

If you haven't got a dozen of these laying around, you haven't built enough computers. :)

You can probably get them cheaper if you have a local computer shop. They've probably got them by the boxload leftover from building machines.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I was thinking like at the most 10 cents for one, like a buck for a 10-pack. It's because the cases we use here at work aren't your typical PC case -- we had the engineering team design one out of sheet metal. I'm the lucky one who gets to take like 3 pieces of sheet metal and install the hardware, then screw the thing together. Pisses me off alot cuz the screw holes never quite line up right :|
I don't know, the engineering guy just asked if I could find those slot covers in the market. Heck, we only use 2 cards, why didn't he just design it with two holes...

Yeah, your local Mom & Pop computer shop might pay you to take some away... Or give you a shoebox full for a buck. Depends on your attitude when you walk in. ;) It's all gravy to them as those are called "infinite profit items" - anything divided by zero is infinite...

I've tossed enough of those things in the trash the past 10 years to build a fvcking destroyer.

I could then wire the thing with all the spare power cords I've tossed after that.

:D

Six bones eh? I'm betting the same Mensa Candidates that buy that $300 gamer NIC card need to stock up on those as well.

I see that everyone is in the same situation as I am. I have bundles of these things stashed in boxes (exact whereabouts unknown :)) as leftovers from nearly two decades of building and maintaining PCs.

BTW, they are generically referred to as backplane slot covers or plates. Some are really cheap pot metal - aluminum, tin, you name it. I've not seen plastic ones. Maybe they are too expensive. LOL

I guess I should gather them all up and take them down to one of our used computer shops, such as "Computer Renaissance." Might be able to trade for something useful - like an old serial cable. :)
