What are those Japanese ice cream balls called??

A lot of Japanese restaurants have 'em. It's ice cream surrounded by some sort of a doughy/gelatinous type shell. They ROCK. For those of you who live in Chicagoland, I think they sell them at Mitsuwa? I wanna buy a crapload of them.

They sell them at Trader Joe's too. At least where I live, Mitsuwa always sells them for a little more than Trader Joe's.

Your local supermarket has them also, Vons, Safeway, Ralphs. Somewhat expensive tho, if i remember, 5-6 bucks for a box of 6?

Awesome! Thanks, guys 🙂 I'll hit Trader Joe's. I could try a local supermarket (Jewel, Dominick's) but I imagine it would be a nightmare trying to find it, let alone asking someone who works there "excuse me..where's the mochi?" "The what?" "Mochi. Japanese ice cream BALLS." "Huh?"

Nobody could have expressed themselves so profoundly as you just did, MichaelD. It does give me cause to envision something rather unsettling, though. Hmmm, frozen rice balls in Godzilla's crotch! No wonder he kept destroying Tokyo. 🙂

Are we talking about the Mitsuwa in San Jose?

Holy crap. I think these are exactly what I've been trying to figure out the name of for years now. I ate them only once, when we first went to Tokyo when we moved to Japan when I was a kid. Now I'll just have to try and find some locally to be sure, but from the pics and description, it sure sounds right.

Nope, I'm talking about the one in San Diego. 🙂

5-6 bucks for a box?! That's like.... a dollar, a mochi! I think the Trader Joe's in my area sells them for $2.50 or $3 a box.
