What are those discs attached to Volvo wheels? - MYSTERY SOLVED!!!

Today I saw, for about the tenth time, a Volvo with some strange black discs attached to the outside of the wheels, at the hubs. They appear to be plastic, and are about 5" in diameter. They are thin, and stick out about 2" from the outer edge of the wheel. In this instance the car had alloy wheels, but I think I have seen them on steel wheels as well. These may not be specific to Volvos, but they are the only cars I have ever seen that had them. Does anyone have any idea what these are, and what they are for? I tried Googling to no avail.

EDIT:

They are always on fairly recent (700 series and newer) Volvos, but not on brand new ones. They are too flimsy and stick out too far to be any kind of standard equipment, or to protect the wheels or lugnuts. They appear to snap on to the lugnuts, or at least be secured by them in some form or fashion. The cars in question are not on carriers. Now that I think about it, I think I have seen them on Saturns as well.

EDIT, again - Eureka!

These are hub covers used as part of the "Spike's Spider" system, a weird substitute for studded tires or chains - it is actually a spider-shaped device that goes over the entire wheel/tire. I had just seen cars equipped for "Spike's Spider" but without the Spider installed. Live and learn! The disc I talked about looks like this, and here is info on the entire system. The fact that I was seeing them mostly on Volvos was coincidental.

No, that can't be it. They would not really do that - they look really flimsy, and are too small to protect anything. I am totally perplexed by them.

Try and find a pic of it because I have no idea what you are talking about. I also looked at some Volvo's at www.volvocars.com and didn't notice what you're referring to.

Possibly lug nut covers on snow tires? For some reason I remember my parent's old 1992 Saab 900 having ugly, black, plastic lugnut covers for the snow tires.

Its a Swedish conspiracy! Its a device attached to export market cars to make all other girls' boobs smaller...and that way Swedish girls will have the biggest boobs!!! :Q

I think I know what you are talking about. I see them on a Saturn on the way to school. I'll grap a pic of them on Monday! 😀
