I have a new samsung 19" crt 997df monitor. For some strange reason it has these faint horizontal lines visible when looking at a solid color, they only appear at the right and left sides, but it's like a "raking" effect.....I can see them on the whole screen in certain colors. Is this endemic to these monitors? Did I buy a dud? Who can recommend a GOOD 19 or 21 inch crt monitor for graphics and surfing and a few games that won't break my bank? the samsung 957df got great reviews, wouldn't this one be newer?

I believe these are the aperature grill lines and they are common in most high end CRT monitors.

I can't recommend any monitors cause most people are going to LCDs now. You might try the reviews on cnet or pcworld.com

I have NEC FP995 monitor and with white background I can see some lines but they are not as visisble as you are describing for your monitor.

Well, it's not just one strictly horizontal line. The lines kind of swoop up from straight horizontal toward the left and right sides of the screen. They are like a big rake effect, and it's not just one they are all stacked like, well, like raking. I don't remember this from my lower end LG monitor I just ditched. Why would a higher end monitor have annoying lines like that?

You are most likely seeing a moire pattern. Some monitors can adjust for it; dunno about yours.

I think you are right that is what it looks like!!!! a moire.

how do i know if this can b e adjusted?

also, another question, my monitor seemed to set itself to run at 60hz refresh rate....is there any reason I can't change it to a higher one? or should I let the monitor decide? When I change resolutions does it auto change the refresh rate as necessary? I thought higher was better. I changed to 75 and it works although if there is a difference i can't tell.
