What Are These Folders I Found?

New hard drive, and a fresh install of XP Pro. The disk is partitioned into four sections. Right after the install of the OS, I went to MS Updates and installed all of that nonsense. Well, somewhere along the way a few mysterious folders were put onto the new disk.
For example, each partition has a folder named WU Temp. The folder is empty. What is it?
Another folder is named 011626326ea295c398a4. Inside this folder is another folder labeled sp2. Inside that is another folder named update. Finally, inside that is is a file named update. It's a Windows Service Pack setup file. Why is it in a blank partition, not even in the C drive? And what is it for?

Its one of the updates that probably has finished installing since you haven't rebooted. The updates will automatically use the largest drive available so that why they aren't on C:
