What are the worst books you had to read in school?

Where The Red Fern Grows - Wilson Rawls - Half the book a young boy saves his money for some Bloodhounds only to have them die tragically at the end. Thanks alot Ms. Stevenson for teaching me the joys of reading by traumatizing me in 4th grade so much that I didnt read anything for 10 years! (aside from more crap assigned in school)

The Miracle Worker - William Gibson - Wow, she spells water and the world is saved! Yipee!

The Color Of Water - James McBride - Oh Oh look at me, I know how to juxtapose my chapters! To bad I lack any skill in descriptive writing and have to resort to listing events(though not chronilogically, because im a creative writer). Oh and all Jews are child molesters.

The Tortilla Curtain - T.C. Boyle - Here is the author's attempt at granting himself a "get out of guilt free" card. Look at how clever he is exposing the myopic views of white americans toward illegal alien suffering. Because I lack the ability of subtlety I subject my illegal alien characters to plagues, sufferages, and the cruelty of all white people to such an extreme that it rivals Job. And just in case you missed the frying pan to the head allegory, ill remind you stupid reader 50+ times in the book of the parallel.

Yea, that one sucked. I wasn't a big fan of A Street Car Named Desire... would have rather died than read that.

I hated "Where The Red Fern Grows". It's such a pointless and meaningless book. What's the moral of that story? Bad stuff happens to people who don't deserve it?

Why is it that all the literature assigned to kids is such utter crap?

For me it was Moby Dick. My AP English teacher didn't seem to understand that high school students have more to do and study than AP English. I didn't finish it simply due to the time it was taking me to get through it relative to my efforts in other classes/activities.

Horrid book, not only are they expecting us to read a book that is 6 years old....which in the medical/nursing field is a lifetime, but the information is poorly worded and often wrong concerning proper treatment of common chronic illnesses encountered in a home care setting...

Not that ATOT cares but I do when a nursing book states that digoxin is a front line/first line medication for congestive heart failure.....when most doctors consider it a last resort/fourth line or treatment.....or not even at all! That just pisses me off! (Whats worse is another nursing book of ours asserts, correctly, that digoxin is only indicated as a last resort/fourth line and only front line for certain kinds of atrial fibrillation...)

People wonder why things get screwy in the medical field when everyone isnt taught the same thing.

Due to the fact that I lived in a mostly white area, I'd say all the reverse-racist crap. I'm not a racist, but do I really need to read 8 books about how black, latinos, etc are oppressed? I GET THE POINT ALREADY! The one particular book that I hated in that genre was Their Eyes Were Watching God. It was all in southern english and almost impossible to read.

Basically... if it could be read, I hated it. I'm not a fan of reading.

Old Man and the Sea also sucked. Maybe because my AP English teacher felt we were not advanced enough to READ the book so we listened to the whole thing on a fvcking record player.

To Kill a Mockingbird. I understood the story, but the whole book was confusing to me. The Scarlet letter wasn't that bad...I expected it to be much worse actually. Usually I don't read books though, sparknotes/cliffs FTW.

In jr. high I had to read The Good Earth which was the most boring book I've ever had the honor of reading. We also read The Canterbury Tales, the Middle English version...holy hell, how did our language come from that!

ugh!!! That book sucked so bad!!!

Now that I think about it... so did the Outsiders. WTH kind of name is Ponyboy?!? that book reeked of stupid.
