What are the weird driving laws in California I need to be aware of?

So far I know that nothing is allowed to be mounted on the windshield with suction cups, and headlights must be on when it's raining regardless of how bright it is outside. Are there any other strange laws I should know?

I'd consider those to be common sense laws, not weird.

Only two of 50 states have the suction cup law. I'd call it weird. ;) And annoying/expensive because now I need to buy mounts for my radar detector and GPS unit.

I could be wrong but that could be one of those things that will only be enforced if it is blatantly obstructing your view or you wont get pulled over ONLY for having something mounted to your windshield (i.e. if you did something else wrong and get pulled over, you'll get dinged for the suction cup as well).

The only reason I say this is because I have seen plenty of people with suction cups mounted with police around and nothing happens.

Weird? I drove (or was driven) in California for 22 years and never got in trouble for anything that wasn't common sense

How else would you mount a sat nav or something?

You're not supposed to hang anything from your rearview mirror, but I don't know that I've ever seen that enforced.

How old are you? CA has some interesting driving restrictions for 15.5-18 year olds.

That might mark the first time in history that "California" and "common sense" were ever used in the same sentence.

On I'm over 18, that's no problem for me. :)

As for mounting systems my GPS came with this glue pad I can put on my dash. But it's permanent so I don't exactly want to use it. I'm going to see if I can get one of those air vent clips for MP3 players and cell phones, and modify it.

Turn signals are optional.
If there is a dedicated turn lane, don't feel pressured to get your entire vehicle into it.

I wish they would make that mandatory. I hate assholes who make you guess whether or not they're turning or going straight.

Keep a good distance from any asian women drivers wearing welding masks, they always have the right of way.

LA has their own set of rules. A friend from LA told me that you NEVER prepare to stop when you see a yellow light or you'll get rear ended.

<--- rural NorCal, where the drivers are at least somewhat sane

using turn signals IS mandatory. but plenty of people ignore the law, unfortunately.
