it was meant to be able to hook up digital cameras, video cameras (firewire), and the usb for accessories (gamepads, sony's camera thing, keyboards)

Certain steering wheel controllers use the USB port. Also, the Eye Toy and the headset for Karaoke Revolution and SOCOM.

Edit: You can also use a USB keyboard to chat in EQ Online Adventures and FFXI.
