Hi,

I am trying to lear Linux, and I am taking an introductory course in College, but at home I have set up Debian, but since I am not the only user, I can't experiment too much. At school I have a machine to play with. I installed debian, but I am not sure what are good entries for the sources.list?

Thanks for the info,
pitupepito2000

Just the normal whatever.debian.org, and then look at apt-get.org for sources for whatever other software you want that debian doesn't have (kde3, x 4.3, mplayer, etc)

I just use the normal Debian sources and the ones for mplayer, what in particular are you looking for?

thanks for the info. I am just looking for regular sources that will allow me to show off in school the capabilities of Linux.
A lot of people hadn't seen something like Knoppix before.

I was rooting around in my Knoppix 3.2 install and noticed the sources in sources.list are all of the unstable variety and point to mostly German ftp and http servers. The stable sources were all commented out if I remember correctly.

I dont think relying too much on sources other than the default debian sources is a good thing. Many times you might end up with broken packages.
A nice reminder to myself from one of my earlier attempts of using too many non-default sources:

**********************
W: Duplicate sources.list entry xxxx a3/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/debian.a3.nl_debian_dists_a3_main_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry xxxx / Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/wh9.tu-dresden.de_kde3_karolina_._Packages)

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
***********************

********************
Errors were encountered while processing:
privoxy
xfonts-scalable
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
********************

These errors can be corrected and HAVE been corrected, but I dont think you would want something like this happening to you during a demo :)

That's what sucks, it's pretty much a necessity. Showing off KDE 2 isn't going to impress people all that much :p

Besides the default source, my sources.list has the sources for mplayer, kde3, wine, openoffice, and blackdown java :)

I haven't had any problems, but I would recommend extreme caution when fooling around with unstable. Regardless of which, unless something specific is needed I would recommend sticking to the official sources because they're just that, official.

Thanks for the info guys. I will just use the default sources that come with the CD. I actually have a similar problem right now with some broken dependencies on my debian box at home.

thanks

All I actually have in mine are x 4.3 and mplayer sources. Tried out kde3 on the boss's laptop and it went nicely, he's got a spiffy little setup :p

I'll need to be installing open office on it too sometime...

Good thing KDE 3.1 finally made it in then, huh?

Frankly booting Knoppix is usually enough to impress people, an entire OS complete with GUI and office tools on CD is pretty impressive to Windows people.
