overall perfomance - doesn't have to do anything perfect, but does it all well
* "Large capacity" = 500GB-1TB?
as stated in the OP - 500-750+
* "Ridiculously priced" = Lowest cost per GB or lowest cost period?
price per GB - of course a simila spec'd drive is going tocost more as capacity goes up... but $2/GB is kinda obsense
* "...or loud" = The quietest may not be the "top performing" HD for you.
from the reviews, it seems the deskstar 1TB was quiet, especially given the perormance
You've poo-poo'd the Raptors, so all 10K HDs are out for you.
I poo-poo'd them b/c the performance/$ is really just not there... i've got a 36GB raptor now - its really loud.

The Seagate 7200.11 1TB's outperform the Hitatchi 1TB's. There is a review of three different 1TB drives from different manufacturers on Toms Hardware and it reviews the Hitatchi 1TB, the Seagate 1TB and the Western Digital GP 1TB.
For pure performance the Seagate wins, the Western Digital I believe has the worst performance but is very power efficient, though I don't think a few Watts difference will mean anything to you. All of the 1TB drives have come down in price, at least on NCIX.com they have.

I don't really understand the difference... which would be better from a overal performance performance standpoint, the 7200.10 or the 7200.11? They both seem to be reasonably quiet, but from what i can see, are similar speed/performance wise.
