What are the symptoms of a dead cpu?

What are the symptoms of a dead cpu? Will the motherboard even turn on, or does it just not power up? Its a P4 if it makes and difference. Thanks.

You should have power to the motherboard, but when you hit the power button nothing happens. Try the cpu in another known working motherboard.

It is hard to separate out whether a CPU is dead, a motherboard is dead, or a memory DIMM is dead or if the power supply is failing. They can all do exactly the same thing. You need to swap components to troubleshoot it. Statistically if there is a problem, the most common cause is the motherboard since it has the most discrete components.

Is it a system that you're building from scratch or a system that's been working and has suddenly died?

Well, when you turn it on, and its doesnt do anything and the monitor reseives no signal, thats a pretty good assumption, but if you can turn it on then its not a ps problem.

I have the same issue.

Green light on the mobo is steady, I do not have anything else plugged into the PSU, when i hit the power switch, the CPU fan will not spin.

Is it my mobo or CPU?

My system was running fine for 24 hours before it crapped out.

If power needed to run the computer isn't sufficient, the computer would not start. Also If there might be a bad power connection, the computer might not start. If the CPU is broken, then it will turn on and nothing will happen. But it could also be a motherboard problem. Try testing out the motherboard with another cpu and this will tell you if the motherboard is broken, or if the cpu was the case.
