I am thinking about a dual 980Ti setup for 4k gaming. I enjoy my 4k TV, and am not sure if I would be happy settling for 2560x1440 with a single 980Ti.

You would be fine with that on a 980TI, i play that on 780Ti for games just perfect.

The problems with SLI are mainly quirks with games not supporting it, also full screen window mode has issues sometimes with games. Newer games sometimes require a patch to work correctly wit SLI..driver issues seem to crop up with sli systems more often.

I had SLI for a long time, it was great, however I soon figured its cheaper and less quirks if I just bought the best video card every 3 years.

SLI is great though if you are struggling with a certain game you really enjoy.

Not all games work with SLI, so in those cases you are essentially running on a single GPU.

Not all games scale well with SLI. Though you have two GPUs, you might only see a 20-30% increase over one.

The games that do work well are good when they do. Though microstutter is still an issue.
