What are the sharpest textures you have ever seen?

Call of Duty wasn't impressive at all. I'd say Half-Life 2 overall. Far Cry has some stuff that looks like the real McCoy, but their game, just like Doom 3, is inconsistent. Some stuff looks really good, other stuff not as much. Game is still fun, but it drops the believability factor a bit.

The problem with having very sharp textures in game comes down to video memory. The sharper they are, the more swapping will have to occur between the game and the video card.

I've seen the Quake 3 engine screenshots. The best utilization of normal mapping. And the best textures ever. I with I had saved the link.

Call of Duty didn't even look better than games that came out over a year before it, pathetic in the visual department.

I'd have to say that Crytek and Source have the best looking textures I've seen. I think you could do some cool things with the Doom 3 engine too.

graphics arent everything 🙂 Call of Duty was MUCH better than any new game that game out yes even HL2 Doom3 and Farcry in the gameplay department.

The specular highlighting in HL-2 is the best I've seen so far. The normal mapping in Doom 3 looks realy good, too.

I agree. Also BF1942 seems to be in the same boat. There was nothing special in the visual department yet the multiplayer gameplay was incredible.

BF1942 was cool aside from a few problems I had with it, but I couldn't keep playing since it never ran well on my old rig. Just like most EA games though.

CoD was so much fun the first time I played it, but the fun rapidly diminished. Now it's just kind of boring, and the graphics aren't enough to hold my attention. However, turning fools into swiss cheese in FarCry never gets old.

I'd say Painkiller, nothing looks blurry even if you stand very close to the surface. FarCry's textures are good. But half-life2's are baaad compared to the first two. FarCry has better specular than both, and Doom 3 has the best Normals (IMO).

What about Condemned coming out for Xbox 2 and PC before the end of the year? The 3d models looks like crap (for being on the Xbox 2) but when they compared their textures to real life photos I couldn't tell the difference.

Bull. Overdone /= good. Far Cry's specular is way too heavy - everything in that game looks shellacked. Half-Life 2's subtle Radiosity effects look much better, and Doom 3's sepcular is an improvement, but still too heavy handed.
