Okay, we're thinking about having a movie night in one of the engineering classes at my college. We aren't charging for admission, and everything was going fine, but one of the peope in administration questions the legality of us showing the movie and is scared of getting the university in trouble. Anybody know the law regarding this or have some useful links?

i don't know the exact number. But you aren't allowed to show a VHS/DVD to x amount of people at the same time

If it's for 'educational purposes' all should be fine. If it's entertainment, that's public exhibition and to find the law on that - fire up the movie and read the FBI warning.

public showing.. the law says you have to buy the rights to the movie... i dont know who would check up on a thing like that but i'm pretty sure it's illegal...

my town shows "movies in the park" during the summer... they pay a fee to some agency to have the right to show the movie for that night.. just like movie theatres pay for the right to show the movies
