What are the responsibilities as sitting in an emergency row?

Had a debate today on what the responsibilities are for sitting in an emergency row in an airplane.

To open the door I read, you need to be able to lift 40-50lbs with your shoulder.

Other than that, are you required to guide people out or hold the 40-50lb door when others leave?

or is your responsibility to lift that door open and get the heck out of there?

My friends tell me you need to guide people out, but that makes no sense, how can you guide people out without blocking people's way when everyone's rushing to getting out.

Anyone know?

Only to open the door an move it so that it does not impede the exit. The flight attendants are the ones to guide people.

I assume you also have to be able to understand English as you will probably be given instructions by the crew on what to do.

You also have to keep headcount of all passengers exiting your door, and double-check the cabin once no more passengers are exiting.

Check for debris/fire/safe exit, open the door, understand the instructions and be willing to take orders from an attendant or other crew member. That could be taken to be to remain inside to assist. If I was ordered to do so I would.

I think you have to stick around and let everyone else get out FIRST....is it worth it for that little extra legroom?? ;)

It is your responsibility to *KNOW* how to operate the door (and when to do so). That means you actually need to read the instructions and then look at the door itself and figure out in your mind how to do it. If you fail to do that it will cost you at LEAST five seconds, which could mean the lives of the people on board the aircraft.

Oh yeah, and if there is a fire then your ass is getting shoved out the door by the people behind you as soon as it is open.

To test the door at least once an hour during the flight and immediately before take off and landing.

Yeah, checking for fire, debris, etc BEFORE opening the door.

Other than that, you gotta open the door.
