Well everything finally got here for my system unfortunatlly be fore I assemble, I have to ask a question I used to know the answer to.

Where do I uses the little red washers when I mount the motherboad to the case? Part of me thinks I that am supposed to use them between the motherboard and the post from the case AND between the motherboard and the head of the screw. :disgust:

Another part of me thinks that only one goes per screw, but for the life of me I can't remember if that is on the case side (bottom) or the screw head side.

Finally, some other small part of me seems to think only one screw should have only one washer.

Please help me get this right...

With the exception of the monitor, CDRW, and the Ethernet card, this will be the first time everything was new on a system since my very old 286-16. The bonus is this time I will have my old Celeron 333 sitting around on wirking order. I have never had 2 complete computers before, I'll just have to share monitors, or figure out a way to attach the old system to the TV.

In case anyone is curious, below are my system specs, any comments on the setup are welcom...

7 bay ATX Case w/300w AMD Approved P/S
MSI MS 6330 K7T Pro2-A KT-133 Socket-A ATX
AMD Duron 700 MHz w/Global Win FHP08 standard fan
Apacer - 256MB PC133 SDRAM
45Mb Maxtor ATA 100 7200RPM
D-Link DFE-530TX+PCI 10/100 Mb Ethernet NIC Adapter w/Wake on LAN
Goldstar-LG Electronics CED-8083B CD-RW
CTX x-70 17" Monitor

Mine didn't come with any red washers (any washers for that matter). Neither have any of my other motherboards.

They usually came with the mounting screws, I have gotten them before. I remember one board that had the plastic clips for all point but ONE, and it had a post, screw, and washers. That is the one that makes me think that there MIGHT be a reason for this. Of course since MSI didn't mention anything about how the board is mounted, that in itself might me that they are unimportant.

Thanks

I sually use them between the motherboard and screw head, might lessesn abrasion from the underside of the screw head. Another possibility is that they are a legacy part included to avoid grounding the bottom of the motherboard, but like the LED display, (THank God!) they are starting to be phased out.

They do not come with motherboards, they come with cases only.
If you ordered a case you should have gotten them but some cheaper manufactures omit these little washers.

Weeeeeelll sonny...wa back in the olden days of building PC's you had to put those little red washers between the screws and your motherboard when you were attaching it to your case. If you didn't BOOM your board was fried.

Thanks everybody!!! I went ahead and used the washers since it wouldn't hurt anything. I thought that grounding the motherboard was involved in there somewhere. I'm glad that point is moot.

The washers are used to retain the screws to the motherboard.

Put the screw in the motherboard and "thread" the washer onto it from the back side. It's helpful with screws that are difficult to get started because of cramped spaces on the board. If you need to remove the board, the screws will stay with the board.

It's together, despite finding out that I scratched my Windows ME disk so bad it won't load and had to pull out the WIN 98 disk, then finding out that there are serious compatibility problems with my Rage Fury Pro and Win 98, then having trouble (either from Telocity or ATI) getting through to the support site to get the updated drivers... Telocity IS being a PITA which adds to my challenges. Don't even ask about the pluming problems the house has had today :(

Actually, everything as far as the system itself went fine. I haven't tweaked yet, will start that later tonight. I have spent most of today loading and updating software. I must say the system went together smoothly and the LiveUpdate was painless.

Thanks for all the help, I forgot how much I actually enjoy this stuff despite (and a little becase) of the challenges that arise.
