What are the quietest hard drives & cd drives?

I personally recommend Samsung hard drives for silence. Seagates are supposed to be quiet too, but the one I purchased made this annoying click sound every 30 seconds which drove me up the wall (and no, it was not defective, Seagate described this as some special technology which keeps the head active and prevents damage to it). I replaced it with a Samsung which was even quieter and no clicking.

With optical drives I don't have much experience, but my NEC 2500A DVD burner is one of the quietest that i've owned.

Avoid Western Digital, as all their drives I've ever owned are on the loud side and increase their noise as the drive ages.

That noise drove me mad. I have the tools to disable it (thanks mechBgon) but you've since sold the drive 🙁

Heard Samsung drives are quiet but never tried them myself so Id go with Seagate. FYI theres an app out there called AnyDVD which you can use to either increase the performance of your dvd drive (louder) or slow it down to virtually silent. I have tried in on a desktop NEC burner and laptop burner and it works very well imo.

Well, it seems you are not up to date. Samsung used to make the queitest drives. Not anymore. Samsung is good. The new king seems to be, beleive it or not, WD! The new WD drives are very quiet and very fast. I recommend searching in the silentpcreview forums.
