What are the odds that it could happen?

A particular female friend of mine, called me scared out of her panties. She said that she heard Secretary of Defense Mike Esper say on the news that he was resigning, because he believed that Trump might mobilize the military to stay in power.

And he wanted no part of that.

I told her, there has never been a dictator in the history of the world that was able to stage a coup without the support of the military.

And Trump doesn't have it. But it is thought-provoking.

Does he really need the military to stage a coup, considering that his cult is so large?

The military oath is to the Constitution and if they moved against the United States for Trump they will have committed proper Treason. They would be subject to one penalty, execution.

Nope, not happening.

You missed the question at the end.

Considering the size of his cult, does Trump need the military?

And you know as well as I do, that is not an absolute.

How many Confederate soldiers were given amnesty, and welcomed back into the Republic? For that matter, how many of the Confederate states were welcomed back into the Republic?

Let’s see how well that deplorable army stands when they get hit with a fucking drone strike.
Let’s see how any militia does when the get hit by a drone strike like any random terrorist group has been hit.

Sorry I missed that. No, Trump isn't going to have the military. No, the cult is screwed up but the number who are willing to die and have their families go with them is relatively small. States will call on the national guard and then cultists can fire at tanks. There is a terrorist concern of course and I should not be surprised that small groups of "patriots" turn out. The former will be hunted to extinction and the latter clubbed like baby seals. Most Republicans would shoot them.

There number of people in his cult that are actually willing to die for him is tremendously small. Even if they weren't, they are no match even for the DC police, much less the NG.

There is no pending civil war. Maybe a few isolated incidents. The military will not turn on the country.

Looks good on paper... But

And I found the cause of her concern. Esper will refuse the order.

Officials say Defense Secretary Mark Esper is prepared for possibility Trump may fire him

Congressmen also take an oath to uphold the constitution, and yet...

Those are political animals, a distinctly dishonorable breed. No, any revolt by the military will result in them being shot by other servicemen. There will be no aid and comfort and no prisoners if there is resistance.

Former Navy seals aren't Jason Bourne, they'd still be mowed down by the national guard. Navy Seals have a massive organization of intelligence and logistics behind them, not to mention the most advanced technology money can buy. Former Navy Seals have an AR-15 and a redneck friend.

Of course, they could carry out well planned terrorist attacks, but they aren't overthrowing the government.

Yeah. I don't see a coup by Trumpist brownshirts (or silver shirts or whatever the term would be). Though I don't entirely agree with all of that. i.e. that any 'terrorists' will be easily hunted down. As with Islamists they could pop up occasionally all over the place for a very long time to come. Anger over losing, amplified by what will no doubt be an irresponsible reaction to defeat from Trump, will probably recharge the battery of 'crazy' enough to power the occasional Tim McVeigh for a long time to come.

That's true. But still, let's ask Gretchen Whitmer if she should be concerned.

Done Infrastructure is likely hardened. Protected from billy bob and the jeep brigade.'

Our food, water, electric, gas, internet, trains, bridges are not hard targets. You mass attack them all to cut off entire regions around the hardened targets. Wait until the cities cannibalize themselves from lack of resources. Won't take long to sap the entire "strength" of the country and its cohesive operational capability. It'd look like a post apocalyptic movie more than anti terror ops as you imagine it. Helps even the playing field when you widen the scope and scale of the field.

Don't need to directly attack an enemy if you burn everything around them.

Surveillance abilities in times of national crisis would run on steroids 24/7 and if martial law declared then forget privacy until that's over. We're much more sophisticated than from the days of 9/11 and no one talks about this stuff.

Can they be a PIA? Absolutely and to catch them before they strike isn't easy. In the case of participating in a Civil Way, they will have declared themselves Traitors in the proper Constitutional sense and as anyone who aids or provides comfort to them, such as their families, would be Traitors too with the penalty of death being very real. That should prove a disincentive for those who haven't a clue of what real war is.

The Patriot Act, is still in force, although toned down in today's world, but I'm sure they would dial up the volume on that.

But we didn't execute too many Confederate soldiers off the battlefield. And let's face it, we're moving from a tyrant in the Oval Office, to a nice guy.

Is he more likely to forgive? Or put them in front of a firing squad?

Then things get really nasty if those tricks are used. Our counter intelligence operatives have a great advantage here than overseas. To use the jargon HUMIT is almost impossible to obtain directly in the ME and so we have to deal with intermediaries. In the US, we are like the rest of the population.

Anyway, I'm off. Later guys

That is up for the judicial system to decide or in the case of treason by military tribunal. What you describe is summary execution and that is indeed rare but permitted under martial law.

The point is that death is a real possibility as is incarceration for life.

Camoshirts or MAGAhats are probably the terms that could be used.

Not gonna happen.

Agreed. Trump will moan and whine to the very end, but he doesn't have the military support. If anything, soldiers could be the ones escorting Trump out of the White House if he refuses to leave.
