Don't know about Memorex, but I've seen other brands with that look. It's actually UV protection. :Q

i bought a spindle of these, the black coating seems to resist scratches better than blue/green CD-R's. but they seem to be more rigid, which i personally do not like.

It is supposed to be for better scratch resistance.
