What are the legalities of Win XP Pro Corporate Ed.

I recently bought a Laptop with XP preinstalled. No COA provided. The seller insists that it is a corporate version and a legal install. I have no history with corporate versions and am skeptical on the legalities of selling a system out of the "office" that holds the corporate license.
How are Corporate licenses controlled? I assume there is a set amount of systems per Corporate licenses. Should there still be a COA per system? I think so......?

Thanks...............

'Corporate' versions are licensed to a company that is a member of Microsoft's Open or Select licensing program and who purchased a license. The license is only valid for that particular company. The license cannot be sold or transferred.

There is no COA for each system. The company just uses their invoice from their reseller as proof of purchase. Some resellers send a certificate as well for proof of purchase. (Not a Microsoft certificate, just something from the reseller showing the purchase.)

Anyway, your OS is not legal.

I'm afraid the seller lied to you. As Bozo posted, the corporate version is licensed to a company. Individual copies can be transfered. Even if they could, the seller would be in effect stealing a copy from his employer. I'd go back after him for the cost of a legit copy.

Since the seller lied to you about the legitimacy of the OS installed on the system I have to wonder if the company that owned the notebook is aware of the fact that it has been sold. 😉 Be careful.

Did the system come with a sticker that has a Windows XP license key on it? If not, you can be pretty certain that your Windows install isn't legit.

Also, you should call MS and rat him out. He prolly stole extra money from you being the dirty theif he was. Don't take crap from him, get MS after him.

If it happens a second time, it's a several thousand dollar fine.

I'm already on the case with MS. There were other issues with the laptop, which was sold as "Mint". It was not. It arrived with a cracked floppy housing, busted LCD latch and illegal OS and MS Office XP. He is pulling the "it must have happened in shipping, so its your problem" routine. I wish I could share our emails with you guy's, pretty comical! I cannot rationalize with those types of people. 🙂
He is being a real jerk off, so I decided to pursue this with MS, E-bay, and Paypal. He will ofcourse get the proper feedback at Ebay also.
It was a great deal (with or without the OS). So I'm not looking for a refund. I'll let the above companies do the dirty work. 🙂
BTW it has a W98 COA on the back. luckly I had a XP Pro COA doing nothing so the legalities are taken care of on my end.

Corporate Liscenses, aka, Volume Liscenses are for companies to use so they don't have to go to the store and buy 100 copies of Windows.
If you bought a new computer, you should have recieved an OEM version, and been given the origional Windows CD with the CD Key.

Naw, I can understand your lingo, it just takes a little extra time. It's harder to comprehend, kinda seems like you're talking with a mouthfull of marbles. It's just not particularly effective communication.

That sucks dude, download the key viewer (*HERE*) and see what key it was installed with...M$ would probably get him in more trouble if its the FCKGW.... key
