What are the income streams of a site like AT?

I would say 90% advertising and 10% advertising.

Mostly, advertising. I'm sure AT get's a pretty penny for having their name slapped on product boxes too. (I consider endorsements to be advertising)

And that alone is enough to provide incomes to all of the staff?

I must be grossly unaware of the amount of money advertising for a site like this can deal with.

They could be making so much more money with affiliate tags in Hot Deals, Video, Hardware forums, etc.

I'm not sure how much the forums cost, but they could almost break even.

Well I always thought a site like this was usually ran for the enjoyment and for the small additional income, but with the sheer amount of articles on this site, the top people on the AT staff surely don't hold full time jobs in addition to this, right?

To quote Spaceballs:

"We're not just doing this for money......we're doing it for a SH!TLOAD of money!!"

Though like Rossman says, I'm surprised that AT doesn't stick affiliate links on everything in the HD forum.

Its all about traffic.. Though to a certain extent I'd say users here are a little better trained at avoiding advertisements.. I almost never notice/look at them.

Sites like Yahoo and Google are multi-billion dollar companies based on advertising.. Get enough traffic, make enough money..

Also note, alot, if not most of their hardware was probably obtained via donations or very highly discounted.. And when you buy bandwidth in bulk, it becomes relatively cheap. Not to mention the fact that the forums are majority text, and they use compression to deliver everything.. The ATOT page its normally about 55kb, but when compressed is only about 10kb.

Anyone got a rough figure? How does one work for a site like this and still get paid decently?

I heard from a person who used to work for Creative that they would pay up to $5000/month for a banner to be on a big site

Well, rumour has it that Anand went from his BMW Z3 a few years back to a Ferrari.

So I'd say this place is doing fairly well.

I'm still baffled that solely advertising provides that high of an income to all the people on this staff.

I've always gone on the assumption that anand runs some sort of porn site on the side...like xxx.anandtech.com

Hah ... good book ... I bought it for my brother a few years back ... (not like he "needed" the book, but he read it and enjoyed it ... and I got to support my favorite webmaster ...)
