What are the guidelines for banning rude people?

Hello,

I am hoping to open some good dialog with the Mods about banning someone for general behavior rather than a particular reason.

The forum guidelines state:

"2) Temporarily banning a member (vacation) ? If a member receives multiple warnings, or commits a serious violation of our guidelines, the member will be temporarily barred from posting on the forum. A note will be made in the users profile about reasons and length of vacations. Initially vacations will be short (a week), but if a user has received multiple vacations, moderators can grant longer vacations (multiple weeks or months in extreme cases)."

I would like to know if people can be banned for being rude or an asshole without a specific reason attached (other than people complained about them).

Having seen plenty of rude people it appears to me as if you have to break a specific rule, is that the case? Is leeway given here to the Mods?

I see the following:

"We ask for respect and common decency towards your fellow forum members. This includes adhering to the following guidelines which will be enforced via a combination of member request and moderator discretion.

1) No trolling, flaming or personally attacking members. Deftly attacking ideas and backing up arguments with facts is acceptable and encouraged. Attacking other members personally and purposefully causing trouble with no motive other than to upset the crowd is not allowed."

However I am wondering if a specific incident must be given as a reason for a ban.

I think it depends on the topic, the thread, the member, and the mod. Rudeness is subjective, so mods tend to be very lenient about it (at least I try to be). I dunno, that's just me, I'm still a newbie.

This is the impression I have gotten, I am just trying to figure out the guideline.

Is the guideline to let it slide until there is a specific rule broken then to ban based on an instance of rule breaking

or

Is it possible to say they are a jerk and have been for the last few weeks so they need a vacation to sort things out

Thanks for the input Sagalore.

This is one of the most subjective aspects of the job.

We try to allow for different levels of expression, different maturity levels, etc., in determining what to accept. But we're not willing to allow a member to simply insult others without cause all the time. It is a very difficult line to draw.

So then what would be the judgement call on the following examples:

I'm a little biased but it does work, we've randomly met several couples at parties etc. that have also met via an internet dating site and my friend Liz from college is engaged to a guy she met on match.com.

That's terrific.

Do your boyfriends know that you lied and left out key info on your profiles yet? lol

Wow, someone's angry and trying to make other people join them in their misery. Sorry you're so bitter, it must suck to live like that. :(

I didn't lie about anything in my profile and my fiance and I don't keep anything from each other. He knows about everything ATOT does and more! :p I've never been happier and I'm excited to spend the rest of my life with such a kind, smart, sexy, amazing, loving and honest man. Only 57 more days to go! :)

So because I'm laughing at you and you can't handle it, your primary defense is that I'm not actually cracking up at this but am bitter, I'll give it a 7 as far as delusions go, bravo!......... LMAO!

Quick question, if you did lie on your profile, would you tell me? What are the stats on Match.con applicants admitting to falsifying their profiles in order to make themselves more appealing? LOL

Good luck in your marriage, as far as humorless shrews go, you sound par for the course.........of divorce. LOL!

P.S. I still think your original post was terrific.

Myspace weddings sound like they have the makings of success.

About the relationship: we have been together 3 years and haven't broken up, though we have had our fair share of quarrels. Yes, it is an LDR, but we have been working hard to keep it going. I'm not sure what else to say so I suppose now is the time for questions if you have any. :)

I have a question.

What are you wearing?

It would be interesting to see him weight in on this pile of crap OP refers to as a thread.

Well if the guy picks up the bill and someone exactly resembling say, I don't know, sixone for example could tally up a multi-hundred dollar dinner debt, and that's not counting if she got herself some Mc Icecream for dessert.

Can you imagine what kind of bill one would incur at a slightly pricier establishment, like an AppleBee's?

Yeah, sneak out while she's not home. That's how a real man handles himself.

If that's how you've conducted this relationship, no wonder you two are screaming at each other. Maybe you should work on that, instead of running away.

Maybe you should shut the hell up? lol

Go watch some porn or something, or have a one night stand and don't tell your BF like a "real woman". LMAO

Would also lessen the amount of posts and topics on here as well, thank you and goodnight. lol

There's plenty more where that came from, that's only about the last month or so. Now he might have already been warned about some or all of those but there was no visible discipline.

Edit: To clarify, this thread was not originally about him it's just the best example I can find of what I am referencing in the OP, people who are rude and seemingly add no value to the community.

Our L&R mod Sagalore has already brought him up for inter-mod discussion about possible sanctions, including a permanent one.

We are close to reaching a consensus and will act soon. Your compilation has been helpful. Frankly, few of us like to wade into L&R in any detail.

Haha well I doubt that he will believe this but I honestly created this thread simply for rule clarification (does there have to be a specific reason for a ban) but when I started thinking of an example after Rio Rebel posted that's who I thought of.

It took about an hour and a half to sift through all his L&R posts and put everything together so I don't blame you for not wanting that chore.

That was a great example, because in some of those links, the first comment is not really over the line, then there's a response, and then it escalates. It's always hard to moderate when it gets into back and forth.

But your contributions here make a great case. You can't argue with that many examples. The thing is, in most cases we're having to make a judgement on each separate incident, and we don't have time to put it all together. I do sometimes view a member's recent posts to get a feel for them when I see things like that. But imagine if we tried to spend the hour and a half you did on each member who likes to push the limits.

And God knows, some of our members seem to get a forum woody from pushing the limits. It's like an obsession for some people.

Good thread, and thanks for the info.

Yes, please give Zap Brannigan a ban or a long vacation. He's very irritating, and his posts are universally inflammatory while containing no contribution to the dialogue.

some recent zap posts left me all "WTF" too. "Rude"/smart-ass posts are to be expected, but are usually punchlines to someoes inadvertent setups, zap either doesn't have the knack or is purposely causing trouble.

Yes, I've been getting the pleasure of his enormous wit through pm.

I guess he doesn't realize that if wanted 14 year old humor, I'd watch Disney channel with my daughter.

Heck no. I can say from personal experience that if someone is acting like that, its more than likely because they have real life issues that they aren't dealing with. When I was feeling down on myself, I would lash out at others. Of course it was basically every night that I was feeling down.

The mods had more patience with me than I deserved. They were very kind and let me come back after I changed my ways. Now I try to help others that I see dwelling in hatred.
