with any of the cheap earplugs I've tried, you can't really use them to jam with a band because they mess up the frequency distribution too much, especially since they cut a lot of the high sounds out of the drums.

aren't there some fancy ones that performers use that just cut the intensity of the sound without any creating holes in it?
what are they called?

Try Etymotic.

They offer 12 dollar a pair earplugs with nearly flat frequency attenuation. You can also get custom ones made with a mold of your ear, but that's a lot more than twelve dollars.

I'm a Blues musician and have been using the foam ones for years. They rate from 0-30 and I typically use 25+. They work really well and are cheap. Flent's "Quiet Please" (29) are a popular brand. Walgreens sells some cheap no-name brand in a jar. Set of 30 are ~$10.

You'ld think you'ld miss stuff, but everybody else cranks their instruments so loud I can still hear everything at normal level.

i use the kind that have several conical traps instead of foamies. Example: linkie-do-da

they don't block quite as much sound as foamies but the sound reduction is more transparent. i find them adequate for my band rehersal. we play pretty loud. marshall stacks and such. however, if you play full stacks at 10, you're gonna need more reduction than that.

the special musician ones are custom-made by your doctor (i think) and are rather expensive (like over $100). but they'd be worth it if you used them a lot and could trust yourself not to lose them.

I have some ER - 20's which I've had since 1998. I love them.

I have to agree with Wag. I work with loud machinery 12 hours a day and the cheap little foam ear plugs offer the best protection. Custom made ear plugs dont offer the best protection but they may fit better.

Another thing to consider is that it takes a long time to get used to hearing things properly, in a loud environment, using earplugs. When I first started my job job I could not understand what anyone said to me unless they literally shouted in my ear!!! But eventually I could everything clearly.

Hope this helps.
