What are the differences between windows 2000 server and windows 2000 advanced server?

Server supports up to 4 processors, AS up to 8.
Server supports up to 4-GB RAM, AS up to 8.
AS supports clustering and network load balancing.
AS costs *much* more.

Besides that, they are identical.

which version is better to host games under?

Also, I am studying for mcse tests, so would havnig advanced server on be that much better, or just throw 2000 pro on for that?

From a functional point of view the differences only come into play if you are running a cluster.

For MCSE you will need Server. Pro will not cut it for you there.

By the way, you can get a 120-day evaluation copy of Advanced Server from Microsoft for $9.95. Yep, that's less than 10 bucks. It's fully fuctional, not limited in any way. It just stops working after 120 days for most people 😉
