of IB having a significant performance boost over an i5 750 lynnfield? I'm stuck with this chip on an 1156 platform and was debating on upgrading or waiting for IB. Mostly use my rig for gaming and handbraking. I've tried OCing this chip and couldn't get it stable even at 3.6 so it's just running stock. I'm considering a 2500k and 1155 mobo just to get into something that I can upgrade in the future, but I'm not sure if it'll be worth it. If it is worth it, can you guys recommend a good mobo? I just need the cpu and mobo, I already have the other parts in my sig.

It depends on how you define "significant".

Buying something now just so you have it to upgrade in the future sounds a little like throwing money away.

The performance increase from the 1st generation Intel® Core™ processors to the 2nd generation Intel Core processor would yield around 10% to 15% increase in performance at the same clock speed. Now the next generation of Intel Core processors are not a new architecture but a die shrink that generally doesnt yield as much of an performance increase. Now with the release of these new processors they will have increase performance from the IGP (Integrated Graphics on Processor) but if you are not going to use this there really won't be much of an increase in overall performance for the 2nd generation Intel Core processors at the same clock speed; at least that is what is being said.

Wouldnt a die shrink allow for higher overall clocks though? So maybe 5.5ghz being standard instead of 5.0.

Go buy a 2600k :p

Seriously though, do you have a MicroCenter available?

Closest one is about 1.5-2hrs away. I'd like to make a trip out to one if only because I've never been there before. I've been to a Fry's and that store's ok but I usually just buy my hardware from the egg.

Ah, well, it might be worth it. It's like a micro-frys.

So, I have driven ~7 hours (one way) to go to Frys because it was a fun road trip with friends. If you have a buddy to potentially split gas with our something it could work out well.

Anyway...

The 2600k is currently ~$280 and you get $50 off of a Z68 motherboard. There is a solid Asus there that is $120, so you get a 2600k and nic(ish) motherboard for ~$350+tax.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070 (2600k, ~$330 alone)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131781 (Mobo, ~$115 AMIR)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 (2500k, ~$210)

So, for just a bit more than a 2500k from NewEgg you could instead have the 2600k which should remove any concerns about longevity or performance delta you might have :)

Now, you have to factor in gas and time and all that... The price delta should be close to $70 for the 2600k setup. You could spend that delta to move up to a nicer SLI capable board or something, or stop at a gas station to fill up and buy a hot dog :p

This sounds like a good idea. I'll just have to convince the wife about going to an electronics store 2 hrs away, and somehow hide my hardware purchase lol

Find something she likes in the area that she would want to travel for. When you get there, drive by the MC and say 'Oh, they have a MC here! I should check it out...'

;)
