...for Crysis, Quake Wars, Alan Wake, and the bunch of great looking games in 2007?

My monitor is 1680x1050, and I'd like to run with most eye candy on. I'd be doing a major system rehaul next winter or summer of 2008 at the latest. I like to game >= 60fps :p

I would wait for R600, but I'm thinking my step up will have expired by then. What to do??

we have absolutely no info on what the GTX can do in those games but simply stated, its the fasting thing out there so if it can satisfy your gaming needs, then nothing can :D

The hell... at 1680x1050 will blow you away, expect to max out every game and still have lots of power to apply AA and AF liberally...

Needless to say you will be happy for a long time gaming at 1680x1050 with a 8800GTX.

Indeed. Think of how long the 9700 Pro lasted for the 2nd generation DX9 games, and it was available before and DX9 games were made. Needless to say, expect the same type of longevity with the 8800GTX. :D

Heh... you guys are ALMOST convincing me :p Any hard dates on R600 release date? I think I might step up to G80 and sell the card to my buddy, then buy the R600 (only if it's faster, of course :p). However I'll only do this if I wouldn't be stuck to a beater card for very long.

--> 35 days left before the Step-Up window closes

I game at 1680x1050, and I just replaced a 7950GX2 with a 8800GTX, and the difference if amazing.

Then just wait it out until your 34th day.

At this point in time... does the rumors of the power of R600 look to completely wreck the G80. Or will they be pretty close?

Nobody knows.. We don't even know the specs of this thing..We all have to wait till NDA is lifted.

If you want my speculative side of the story IMHO there's no way ATI/AMD will release a card 3 months later than G80 and not make it at least equal in performance. It would be a fiasco. From the rumoured specs it seems that it will be very fast. How much more it will depend on the final specs.
In terms of memory performance it seems that it will have a lot more bandwith than G80 and that could prove very useful in many cases.

I think it all comes down to what you want to do.. Wait or proceed right now with a purchase. It's that simple. Do the step up so that you can get the card and later sell it at a decent price and get the R600.
That's what I did. I took a G80 and if R600 proves to be much faster @D3D10(who cares about d3d9 when G80 can give me all I need and much more?)I will take it. Otherwise I 'll stick with my G80 and wait for refreshes.
