What are the chances?

I just ordered 6 Western Digital 500GB hard drives (WD500KS) and out of the 6, 2 of them are busted.

I'm setting up two systems, each with raid 5, three drives in each.

The first system went well, but the second would not install Windows no matter what I did. So I ran the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics on each of the 6 drives, and sure enough - two of them are dead.

So, my question is: what are the chances of getting 2 dead drives? Seem quite strange to me. Anyone else had this type of experience before?

sorry appears that wd as just almost every other manufacturer out there has cut quality in the scramble for marketshare/profits ..

If they were all ordered at the same time, they may be from the same lot. This would indicate to me it could be a quality issue with that lot. Or it could be a lot fo other things. I have had similar problems with WD drives. Check the lot code, not like it really makes a difference, they are still dead drives.

Who were these drives provided by? 2 out of 6 is a high failure rate. Were these retail drives or OEM?
