What are the chances of cheap dual core opterons?

With the X2 costing as much as it does, what makes you think that DC Opterons will be affordable any time soon? :(

Well, they are pretty scarce right now in any case, but just like the X2's, there is a lot of price gouging going on right now. In looking around, I see other retailers selling the the 270 for between $1140 and $1400.

What's the actual "wholesale" cost right now you ask? About $1040 or so. Our price is like $1085, but after covering costs that's only a markup of ~$4.50. So those stores selling for $1200 and more are pretty ridiculous.

In any case, back to the main point, I don't see them falling much. Expect to see them staying in the $800+ range for a pretty long time.

Thanks for a response in which it actually contained some relevent information...

and ProviaFan,
Regular opterons don't go for much more than their athlong64 counterparts...at least on ebay so thats why I'm just wondering right now. AMD has stated that they will have more affordable x2s down the road and I'm 100% sure they will introduce processors which will cost significantly less within a year's time.

Considering the opteron has no real competition in the server market, it seems logical to assume they are going to remain pricey.
Why would you want one over an X2 anyway?
