My first job, it was a big company and they required 3 professional reference. It just was a procedure. Being a first out-of-college job, I had to track down my HS summer job boss for it.

My latest job, they didn't do any reference check. They didn't even ask.

My GF works for PWC. Her company didn't even ask either because they don't 'trust' the obvious biased info. But they did their own extensive background check.

I've had to give references for a few jobs, but they never actually called them.

Most likely they won't bother with the references, it is a formality.
Background check will be done though.

I've had one reference I had been using fall off the face of the earth. They just asked for another one. Doesn't have to be your boss in most cases, just somebody you worked with.

References are rarely an issue. If you can't provide professional references call, explain and ask if you can provide personal references (preferably from volunteer work if you can, or school or other similar responsibility-related situations) instead.
