The Liteon 411s and 811s offer the best values by far for +/- burners and they are also considered top performers.

I think you misunderstood... I don't NEED a black one. A beige will do just fine.

I bought the black Optorite dd0210 a couple weeks ago at newegg for 109.00 shipped. So far, so good. I did have a minor problem with the 2.23 firmware and haven't flashed to the newest firmware, as it works fine most of the time. Just lazy I guess.the newest firmware 2.30 fixes a problem with the last firmware 2.23. This is the email i recieved explaining the problem. Overall I'm happy with it.

Hello,

The new firmware update fixes a problem with the firmware 2.23. Firmware 2.23 creates a problem when reading a CD-R media after burning/reading a DVD-R media disc.
Firmware 2.30 fixes this problem.

Firmware 2.23 adds support for more media. The list of supported media is at http://www.optorite.com/dd0201.htm.

Thank you,
OptoRite Support

Personnally, I like all of the Pioneer products for compatibility. Plextor has a good one too for low cost and just released an 8X. Pioneer announced their 8X (both + and -).

For lots more opinions, check out www.dvdrhelp.com. You can get reported results on players (opinion mostly) and it also will cover media, set top compatibility and tools.

I had lots of friends to group with & talk about how to get a full CD burnt with out error,
then I bought a Liteon 16x10x40x & I didn't need those bums any more. ;)
With the Liteon burn proof stuff, I haven't burnt a bad CD in years.
Nero burning software came with it & I'm a satisfyed customer.
I just ordered a 40x12x48x Liteon for $28 at www.compgeeks.com
refurbished was ok with me.
I suspose there is better available some where ?
But you might look at geeks before you buy.

I'd like more opinions on this. I've asked for a 411s for Christmas, and am wondering if I should ask for another in that price range? Or will I be happy with the Lite On? I don't need the best of the best, just no frustrations.

What about the 811s? It seems the 8x DVD+R is worth it (everything else is same as 411s).

I finally took the plunge a couple months ago & got a Plextor PX-708A for $180 shipped from Dell.

It's been great thus far, although it seems to suck at secure DAE (Much, MUCH slower than my LiteOn LTD-163).

Well, I don't mind asking for a $131 LiteOn, but $180 sounds a bit high to add to my Christmas list. But then the 8x LiteOn is only $18 more, $149.

I have been researching this same question for about a month now, and have decided on a pioneer 106 [oem for A06].

For me it has to be the Plextor PX-708A. I don't know about the poor performance on Secure DAE but I don't think it is enough to put you off, however, Viper may disagree. ;)

I want to get a dual format burner too, but, heh, almost everyone's answer is different on this post. So, let's say I want to spend no more than $120, what's the best to get? I'm considering the NEC 1300a and a couple lite-ons. Anyone?

Get Sony or Plextor. Lite-On is having media issue and won't recongize cheap or unbrand media. I have all three of them and test them myself.

I used to have HP burner, which was NEC 1100 (I think). It takes everything but only +R media.

We were able to pick up a Liteon 411S before Christmas for $89 after mail in rebate. We have only tested its' DVD burning capability with Memorex 4X DVD+R media so far, but it seems to work fine.
