I got a kenwood KAC-7201 800 watt max amp, Are the MtX Thunder 4000 12in speakers a good buy? or is my amp too powerful for these things?

If i should not get this, why, and, what should i buy instead? My budget is about 350$ canadian MAX. Id like to pay about 270 or so, but not more then 350.

I want something really "bassy" something that pounds, something that wont wear out that i will be able to put in my next car.

I want at least 2 12"

Thanks for all input,
Carl

There not bad. Not the best, for for a good "starter" system would work ok. How much is that American? Damned Canadians!
I think for the money you could do better though. Isnt Elemental Designs out of Canada??
Also, Stereo Integrity makes what I've heard if a very very nice 12".
I wouldnt worry about having 2 12's so much though, 1 good 12" will more then likely do you quite well. Or even 1 10" if your short on space.

If I were you, I'd look at Adire Audio Shiva's first. You'll get your bass and then some for the price. And still have good SQ. Longevity of the sub is pretty dependent on how you drive'm. If you dont abuse them, they last quite a long time. Hell, I got 2 Rockford 10" Punch series from like 92 that still work. They aint what they used to be by any stretch, but they still get the job done. Its chowderheads who buy bigger amps then they need and hit the bass boost and crank the rap that have problems with sub life.

never rely on "max" output of the amp... two things u need to know before making your purchase: First is the RMS rate power for the amp NOT the "max" output (it's useless)... Second is the ohm rate that your amp can output... is it a 2, 4, or 8?

Also, what kinda car? SUV? Seden? Coupe?

PM me if you need help.. i probably won't be able to see this thread again...

Since you want something really "bassy" I would recommend a ported enclosure, tuned between 30-35 hertz. Just set the filters right and you'll be all set.

Im new to this car audio stuff, so how would i go about "tuning between 30-35 hertz"?

So im going to get 1 Adire Audio Shiva,

should i make the box myself since i have the material? Or should i buy the box? In the next month i will probably buy another adire audio shiva again, if i like the quality, will the second one be worth it?

Thanks a lot,
Carl

Well, if your going to build you own box I would suggest starting with a sealed box. Literally, you CANNOT screw up a sealed box. I dont think you could if you tried. They are the most forgiving thing in the whole freaking world. You can be off in your measurement by inches, and you can have gaps and unsealed areas galore and it'll still perform well.
Ported boxes are (In comparison to sealed) volumes more tricky. Still fairly easy, but your measurements must be exact or it wont work as you think it should be working and that can cause problems.
Tuning a ported box is all done with the port. Theres alot of math involved (relatively speaking. If your an EE, it'll be a walk in the park) but theres programs that do this automatically. Its a balance between the size of the port and the length of the port.
Going from 1 Shiva to 2 would be a noticable difference *if* you also keep power to each sub the same. Thus, if you have 1 sub with 600 watts and go to 2 with 300 the different wont be very noticable, if at all. If you go from 1 with 600 watts to 2 with 600 watts each the difference should be fairly noticable. In theory your looking at a 3-6 DB gain. I've heard it takes approx a 10DB gain to be a perceived doubling of volume however. But hey, might as well right :)

Thats what i use to model my boxes. Its a pretty good program and has alot of options. It also will let you specify a box size and tuning frequency, then tell you how big to make the port :)
Theres a few things you'll need to account for with ported boxes.
1) Will the port fit. Slot ports have a much better chance of fitting then round.
2) Whats the tuning freqeuncy. You CANNOT run the sub below the tuning frequency without having a crossover to attenuate the power. The sub unloads from the box below tuning and power handling goes way WAY down. Keep the power up and you'll over exurt the sub and ruin it.
3) Port air speed. This is the biggest killer to making ported boxes simple. So, you got your port where you want it for tuning and its a decent size. Now look at the airspeed. Suddenly things go to shyte fast if your using round ports. I wouldnt go over 100 feet per second, I've heard some say no higher the 60 to 80 feet per second for the air speed.

Once you download it, play around a bit first to at least get familiar with the various screens and fields. After that, feel free to post any questions you may have. :)

its for my car, just doesnt feel right to have a tube in my car... lol..

ElFenix: Why do ports suck? Explain.

Whats the curve for, and all that stuff, in that program, i put in my speakers, and put the enclosure, but what does that have to do with the box? haha. whats better having a smooth line, or one that jumps up quickly? Im kinda slow. :)

Thanks guys

I have the Kenwood KAC 7251 which is the same as the 7201 except for the remote bass boost. I have a pair of infinity reference 12" bridged, these things rock. Subs were $75 US for both plus shipping.
