What are the best covers/remixes of songs?

I just heard Tantric's version of "the Chain" and Velvet Revolver's version of Pink Floyd's "Money", which reminds me...

What do you think are the best covers/remixes of songs ever made?

Post titles, bands, and (if legal) links.

Concrete Blonde: "Beware of Darkness" (Harrison), "Ship Song" (Nick Cave), "Close to Home" (Ferry/Roxy), "Everybody Knows" (Cohen), "Little Wing" (Hendrix).

nope. wrong song. he wanted best, not worst. 😉

Knocking on Heaven's Door is the song you wanted.

What is the fvckin' point of covering a song that was already done perfectly the first time? Pisses me off...

The point is to put your own spin on it, or update it... I agree some songs sound better in their original form, but I think it is interesting to hear how some artists change up the covers.

Fails 99% of the time when pop singers try it. Sheryl Crow's Sweet Child of Mine is an insult to the Guns and Roses version. Madonna's American Pie is the greatest bit of sacriledge ever leveled against Don McLean or 70s music.

I find metal or punk groups tend to do better. They give songs a great edge.
Guns N Roses did a couple good covers:
Live And Let Die (originally a Bond theme by Paul & Linda McCartney)
Knockin' on Heaven's Door (originally by Bob Dylan) (The version Avril did was an INSULT to the song  )

Stuff Metallica has done:
Whisky in the Jar (not sure who did it first. Rednex also did a good version)
Turn the Page (originally Bob Seger) (BEST remake of this song)

I Wanna Be Sedated by Offspring (Originally by The Ramones)

Tweeter And The Monkey Man by The Headstones (originally by Travelling Wilburies, I think)

I think it is disgusting to hear how some butchers fvck up true art.

99% of these songs were written, arranged and performed by the same person. What makes these lamers think they can "improve" them?

Nothing, and I mean nothing, could be worse than the original IMO.

For my money, the all-time greatest cover in popular music is Aretha Franklin's version of Otis Redding's "Respect".

Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Heard it Through The Grapevine" kicks the sh!t out of Marvin Gaye's version. That song rocks. They totally put a great spin on it, and a great guitar solo.

Stevie Ray Vaughn can cover Hendrix pretty good.

G-n-R did pretty good with "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"

That's all I know, because my newest CD was probably from 1994. New music sux.

Spoken like someone who's never heard the Madonna version. While I'd normally suggest you download it and listen yourself to find out just how right I am, considering the henious nature of the subject matter involved I'll forego it this time.

I don't doubt that it really sucks - I hate all recent Madonna music, and don't really like any of it. I just can't call it sacrilege to do a bad version of that particular song, which has always struck me as amazingly ponderous and self-indulgent. To each his own, though . . .

i remember enjoying stone temple pilots - dancing days when it came out. in fact, there were a couple decent covers on encomium if my memory serves me correctly.
