Pansonic? Sony? Toshiba?? Hitachi?

My friend insists that Mitsubushi is the best there is😕

Any links you know of would be helpful.

Limit is $2000 ... my friends want to spend like $1500

In my rather subjective viewing of non-HDTV material, toshiba has the best picture for the money. It also has one of the the better pictures for 4:3 content.

Overall though, I like Hitachi but couldn't bring myself to pay the premium for them.

If you read around places like hometheaterspot.com and AVS Forum you'll find Mitsubishi is very well regarded. They are a very tweakable set and. when properly calibrated, outshine almost anything else out there. The Pioneer Elite models will be excellent sets, too, but will cost a few thousand more. Toshiba, JVC, Hitachi and the new Sony RPTV sets also get good reviews.

If I was to get one, I'd be looking at a new LCoS or DLP set.

For $1500...you'd be looking at something like a 34" Direct-View set. I'd look at the Phillips 34" 16:9 Direct-View set.

DLP is very nice, yet still up there in price. The advantage is in the long term though, it will outlast any rear projection or plasma. As for that direct-view set, eh, not bad. But for pretty close to $1500 you can have yourself a very nice mitsubishi ws-55311. That set is awesome. Otherwise look towards Hitachi or Toshiba. If you decide you like Toshiba stay away from Best Buy's Theaterwide line, its crap. The Cinema Series is the way to go.

hope this helps

Best Major Brands in HDTV's in order from best to good. The top 3-4 are very close in comparison.

1. Pioneer Elite
2. Hitachi
3. Mitsubishi (very close to Hitachi's)
4. Toshiba
5. Panasonic
6. Sony
..........
Last: RCA

I did 6+ months of research on which set I was going to buy. I chose the Hitachi after looking at the top 4 in comparison. Don't judge by what you see at Circuit City or Best Buy. Go to a smaller chain electronics store that specializes on TV's and Home Theater. At CC, the model I bought looked like crap, while at a Home Theater store had it and it looked the best of the models. Also, the owner of that store had a Hitachi at home. I recommend going to the Hometheaterspot.com and do your homework. I did, and I am happy with my purchase and I do not have buyer's remorse.

Good Luck!

For $1500-$2000, your three best bets are Toshiba, Hitachi, or Mitsubishi.

Although some people love their Panasonic HDTVs, and Fry's sells the 47" widescreen set for $999 which is a great deal.

Keep in mind that a Mitsu HDTV for under 2K will not come with the HD monitor built in, but rather upgradeable. For a built-in monitor on the Mitsu you will probably have to spend 2500+.

HDTV is too broad a term.

Are you talking about tube, RPTV, LCD, plasma?

Tube=Sony
Plasma=Fujitsu

RPTV is debatable, and I have no clue about LCD... Samsung maybe?

I agree with your ranking... and I also ended up getting a Hitachi. 51SWX20B. I love that thing. 😀
If I had a bigger house and a bigger wallet I would have gone with an Elite though. 😉

I agree but I think Mitsu is just a bit better than Hitachi.

I find that Pioneer Elite and Mitsubishi are the best. Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba are all a close second. Concerning RPTV's that is...
