What are the benefits to removing programs you don't use, other than more space?

What are the benefits to removing programs you don't use, other than more space? Will it make my computer run faster?
 
If they load at startup, you could get to a usable desktop faster by uninstalling. Also, if some have security vulnerabilities you could open yourself up for attack without any useful payoff. In most cases all you do is free up space, but that's worthwhile for it's own sake. It's less crap to look through to find what you need.
