What are the benefits of getting bigger wheels?

Besides visual. Better handling/braking? How much better? And the big question is it worth it? Lets assume there are ok tires already in use.

Girls. LOL. Better handling/response due to the stiffer sidewall on the lower profile tires. You won't really notice it with day to day driving. It will be more noticeable on a racetrack. Other than that... you better pray you never hit a pothole on the street. It's mainly a cosmetic thing... for the "race-car look". Being worth it is a matter of opinion. It certainly looks pretty damn nice if you have 18-19s on... but keep in mind that the bigger your wheels are the slower your acceleration gets as it lengthens your gears technically... just make sure the size matches up with the factory wheels... lower profile tires bigger rims. Also... the thinner your tires get... the more crap you absorb from the road.

less sidewall flex in turning.. good for turning/handling.... bad for acceleration... almost all drag racers use tiny 13 inchers...

They can make your car slower from the increased unsprung weight associated with _most_ aftermarket wheels.

You'll usually get a wider and lower profile tire when you get a bigger wheel than what's on your car. Wider = more contact patch on the road = better handling. Lower profile = less sidewall flex when cornering = better handling. The lower profile also makes the car ride a bit harsher.

Pick two of the three: light, strong, or cheap. That's how you'll find wheels (cheap and strong but heavy, or light and strong but expensive).

Be careful when choosing upsized tires or you could mess up your speedo pretty good. Here is a good java applet showing the effects of changing tire size.

sidenote: tire prices go exponentially higher with the increase of wheel size.

light weight rims are always very expensive, the lightest one I found are the Racing Harts CP035 and Volks TE37, they cost like 300 a piece at least.

Well from what I saw today while having my snow tires put on my truck they are pretty good and getting the crap bent out of them. I think some punks were trading cars but they wanted to keep there own rims and just about every one of them was bent to hell. The tire dude was pounding on them with a big ass sledge hammer to make them look atleast a little round. That can't be the proper way to fix those 🙂.
