My Texas license is expiring. Since I'm a residence in NY now, should I just get a NY license or renew the Texas?

The only thing benficial I can think of in keeping the Texas license is that any points I get here in traffic violations, it does not carry over to Texas.

A texas license will get me into a bar in NY. Are there benefits with an in-state license. I'm working and already out of college?

no benefits, except possibly claiming to be an "outsider" when getting pulled over. That may work against you though b/c a cop will think you won't show up to dispute a ticket if he writes you up.

"NYS recognizes valid driver licenses held by residents of other US states, US territories and Federal districts and Canadian provinces. If you become a resident of NYS, you must apply for a NYS driver license not more than 30 days after you become a NYS resident."

pretty much every state requires you to get their license within 30 days of becoming a resident

so you don't really have a choice

Well, no one will really bother you if you don't, but they're probably not going to renew your TX license if you don't have a valid address there. They probably send your new one to that address.

Unless you are a college student or in some temporary living situation in NY, you should be getting a NY license. You can be ticketed if you are pulled over for not having a NY license if your primary residence is actually in NY.

Aside from being in violation of the law... I doubt you can register a car in NY without a NY driver's license.

You're going to get raped on insurance compared to what you were paying in TX probably. :)

I don't know that you can renew a license if you're not a resident of that state any more. You'd have to get a special license stating that.

If you become a resident of NYS, you must apply for a NYS driver license not more than 30 days after you become a NYS resident.

You can exchange an out-of-state driver license or Canadian driver license for a NYS driver license if the driver license has your photograph, the driver license is not suspended or revoked and the driver license:

has been valid for at least 6 months, or
has expired in the past 12 months, or
is a valid CDL and has been valid for any amount of time, and
The driver license that you exchange must show the date that your driver license was issued. The date is required to verify that the driver license was issued at least six months before you applied for a NYS driver license. If your out-of-state photo driver license does not show the date of issue, get a driver license record or letter from the state that issued the driver license that indicates the date of issue. The letter or driver record must be an original and must be on the letterhead of the Department of Motor Vehicles of the other state. The letter or driver abstract cannot be a copy or a fax.

Insurance in TX is awesome, my parents live there. Actually, NJ isn't *that* bad for older folks with a clean record, my dad's paying around $500/year for his beater '93 maxima...

I've had this situation between Oklahoma and Texas. Advantage in having a Texas license is getting a longer deer hunting season at resident tag fees, disadvantage is paying Oklahoma non-resident fishing license fees. So it'd just depend on what business you do in which state I guess.

The OP did not use the edit function in the first thread, to show this was
resolved. :(

I did not realize someone else had already answered the question, correctly.

Sorry that I bumped a thread, because,
at times, I am too lazy to read past the second posting.
