What are the bare essentials to be hooked to a motherboard to have it post?

you just need a vid card (and a monitor) to see the POST. A system will POST without memory, right? All a bios needs is the flash it's on. Not sure though, because I never had a reason to turn on a computer without ram.

Edit: About the video card, I'm recalling loud shrieking error codes without a vid card, so nvm.

No, I think you need CPU, ram and gfx (card or onboard). Without the CPU, gfx or ram IIRC you just get error mesage, no POST.

Of course, you need a PSU too.
