What are the barcodes for?

I'm sure we've all noticed the barcodes on the COA stcikers for Windows Stuck to our computers. With a USB barcode scanner would this be a quick way to enter a product key if you do a lot of windows installs or is it basically pointless or good for inventory or something? I've always wondered and the google searches I did turned up nothing...

No .. it doesn't work that way. This is from Microsoft site:

Q: What is a COA?

A: A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a label that helps you identify genuine Microsoft software. It includes advanced piracy prevention features to help you verify the authenticity of the software you acquired. A COA may also contain a barcode that is used for product tracking purposes.

Please retain the COA. A COA should always accompany the product that it is associated with. COAs cannot be purchased separately.

For more information about COAs, view the Certificate of Authenticity page
