What are the adverse effects (if any) of using a larger SD Card than my camera supports?

I just bought a cheap digital camera: a Digitrex DSC-3500Z. The camera's box says that it supports SD Cards up to 256MB in size. I have a 1GB SD card. I have inserted this 1GB memory card into the camera and saved some pictures to the camera, apparently without problem.

What are the expected adverse effects (if any) of using a larger SD Card than my camera lists as supported? Is data loss a potential? Will I merely not be able to save any more than 256MB of pictures to the larger card?

I would have expected that the camera would not be able to read the larger (and supposedly unsupported) card, but it can.

Do you have any experience with this sort of situation? The camera comes without technical support.

Thanks.

take a ton of non-important pics, so u have over 256MB on the card and see what happens. i would think it should be fine if it can read it.

Lots of times, the specs on the boxes are out of date.
(256 may have been the biggest memory size when the box was printed)
If possible, you could try their web site for an update.

Otherwise you are stuck with the previous post.....
take a mess of pics and download to your hard drive.
